Roof & Moss Cleaning

Roof moss can tumble down into gutters and block downpipes, or fall onto the surface below, causing a build up of algae and spores of lichen, which can in turn, make the floor surfaces slippery. This creates extra maintenance jobs in clearing it away. The moss knits into crevices and gaps between the roof tiles and in temperature fluctuations it can expand and contract, dislodging and moving tiles out of position in the process.

This can affect the mortar on the sides which can then crack and dislodge, fall away to the ground and leave gaps for water ingress in the gable sides. The dislodged tiles can chip and crack, and often when clearing out guttering we find remnants of broken tiles, all types of tiles appear to be affected. The butted-up roof tiles are to secure against water coming into the property, and the membrane underneath is the second barrier of defence.

Excessive moss on a roof can also disrupt the run of rain off the roof, so out of position tiles could be allowing water to sit on the membrane underneath or push the water flow over the top of gutters. This could potentially create damp zones for algae, moss and lichen growth. Damp walls in turn can create water ingress into brickwork, and signs of this might be mould or damp on the inside walls.
